Of all the commands your puppy will learn, Recall ("Come!") is the one that guarantees their safety and grants them future freedom. A reliable recall means you can trust your dog off-leash in safe environments, knowing they will drop everything and sprint back to you.

At The Good Dog Blueprint, we don't teach recall as an obedience drill; we teach it as the most fun, exciting, and rewarding game your puppy knows. Our goal is to create such a powerful, positive association that the puppy views running to you as a greater reward than any distraction.

Here is the Blueprint for building a rock-solid recall using just one simple game.

The Philosophy: Build Value, Not Force

In the early stages, the recall command should be $100\%$ positive. We are building the dog's desire to be with you, which is the foundation of The Confident Dog.

  • Rule 1: Use Only One Phrase. Choose one unique, exciting phrase, like "Pup, Come!" or "Here!" Never use this phrase unless you are certain the dog will respond, and never use it in anger.

  • Rule 2: Never Let Them Fail. Practice must start in a small, low-distraction environment (like your living room or a short hallway) where the puppy has no choice but to succeed. Success builds motivation.

  • Rule 3: Recall is the Ultimate Party. When your puppy comes back, the reward must be a momentary explosion of joy and high value—making it worth leaving whatever they were doing.

The Blueprint Recall Game: All-Day Fun

To make recall reliable, you have to play the game all day long. The more repetitions you get, the stronger the command becomes.

1. The Surprise Sprint

This is a fun, low-pressure way to start.

  • The Technique: Get low to the ground, use your excited recall phrase, and immediately run backward a few steps. The combination of your exciting phrase, low body posture, and movement will activate your puppy’s chase instinct.

  • The Reward: The instant your puppy reaches you, reward heavily! Use high-value treats (cheese, chicken, boiled hot dogs), pair it with enthusiastic praise, and maybe a little wrestling/play. The reward should last 5-10 seconds—a miniature party!

2. The Hidden Handler (The Name Game)

This technique works on having the puppy seek you out based on the command.

  • The Technique: Have a second person gently hold the puppy a short distance away. Use your recall phrase and run behind a nearby piece of furniture or a door. The second handler releases the puppy right as you call.

  • The Goal: The puppy must use their mind and drive to find you. The reward for finding you is the same massive, high-value celebration. This builds confidence in seeking you out.

*3. The Consistency Rule: Reward, Release, Repeat

The key to long-term success is to not overuse the command or end the session abruptly.

  • Don't Overdo It: When your puppy comes to you, celebrate, give the high-value reward, and then release them back to what they were doing with a phrase like "Okay, go play!" This teaches them that coming to you doesn't mean the end of fun; it's a momentary, highly rewarding pit stop.

  • Keep It Short: Play the recall game 8-10 times throughout the day, in short, 1-minute bursts. This keeps the game exciting and prevents the puppy from becoming bored or anticipating the game.

Next Steps: Proofing the Recall

Once your puppy is running to you $9/10$ times inside the house, it's time to add the challenge of the real world. This is where a long line (20-30 ft) and our balanced training precision become essential to establishing Freedom Within Boundaries.

If you're struggling to move recall training outdoors, or if distractions cause your puppy to tune you out, professional coaching is the best next step. Our trainers will show you how to maintain the excitement of the game while introducing the clear boundaries necessary for off-leash reliability.
